There are plans for the construction of two jet ways or boarding bridges to add up to the already existing 4 jet ways. A plan has also been proposed for the construction of a new cargo terminal.
The Cebu Mactan-Cebu International Airport was inaugurated in the mid 1960s. The airport was constructed to replace the Lahug Airport. The problem of the Lahug Airport was that no further expansion work could be carried out in the terminal because of safety and physical concerns. However, in the later years the expansions were carried out and the present structure of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport was constructed. This is the second largest airport in Philippines just after the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila.

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport in Cebu serves as a major base for operating flights towards Boracay, thus helping in the growth of the tourism industry in the island.
